chiacgo, part 3

it’s gotta by the name. the last name. once again as we were going through security at denver international airport we were flagged for a security search. of course we weren’t carrying anything illegal, just a presentation we were making to a client in chicago, a couple of magazines, and a wet diaper. well, jack, you just better get use to it. having an obscure, but beautiful, last name like St. Cyr will cause you trouble from time to time in your life. we can never really know what’s causing these security checks, but it must have something to do with the ccombination of a flight to chicago (this didn’t happen when we flew back to boston just a few weeks prior), the airline, and our last name. other theories are welcome.

we did have a good trip to chicago. jack spent the morning of our presentation with cathleen, a nanny from north shore nannies, a service that was recommended to us by friends. the presentation went well. the client loved the redesign of their magazine. and that night we all had dinner with jade bannister, a second cousin once removed ( or something like that) at a wonderful little italian restaurant in the neighborhood. on saturday we took jack to visit the robie house, a home designed by egomaniacal architect frank lloyd wright, and then spent the afternoon hanging out in millenium park in downtown chicago. sunday morning we flew back to denver to settle in for the fall. our next travels will take us to jacksonville, FL for christmas with jack’s dad’s family.

first vacation

do babies need vacations? well, maybe from their parents crazy lives. so that’s what we did a few weeks ago. on august 2nd we flew into boston to begin a week of working vacation, before two weeks of real vacation. on saturday the 6th jack got to meet lots of his parent’s friends and some of their kids as well. many thanks to the guiney’s for letting us have the brunch at their arlington home. that afternoon we headed to maine for two weeks at a house we rented on little sebago lake. jack really enjoyed spending time splashing in the lake, hanging out on the beach, being passed around to all his family, and receving lots of presents.

development update

it was awhile ago that i wrote about jack’s development. here’s were he’s at currently.

  1. sitting up with a spotter (kind of like infant olympics).
  2. eating cereal twice a day (just like “uncle kevin”).
  3. back to waking up a few times during the night (similar to former roommate ken’s sleeping patterns). this might be due to the heat here in colorado.
  4. constantly turning to see what’s behind him while being held (imagine a dog casing it’s tail).
  5. minimal crawling backwards (the beginning of crawling forward. time to baby-proof the house).
  6. grabbing, pulling, putting in mouth just about anything.

next up algebra, latin, and the harpsichord.

like nothing else

on a recent trip to boston, while i was having dinner in one of those trendy hip restaurants in the south end, a friend of mine asked me what it was like to be a father. what follows is my answer as i can best remember.

it’s like nothing else in this life. if it’s the right time it’s the most amazing experience, even when jack is crying. because in that sound of crying there is this little reminder of his birth. that first cry from a newborn is one of the most beautiful sounds in the world.

one of the great things about jack is that he doesn’t cry much! don’t get me wrong, he can scream with the best of them, but when he works himself into a good cry i just say to myself. that’s life and give him a little kiss on the head.

cereal for dinner

i’ve known for a few years what a good cook kelly is. today jack got to experience her culinary prowess. yes, kelly made for jack his first bowl of rice cereal . and it was to die for. yummy! for those of you who’d like the recipe here it is. 1.) one tablespoon – organic rice cereal. 2.) one ounce – breast milk. 3.) mix. 4.) serve to infant. 5.) watch with enjoyment 6.) hose down infant and the immediate area about 10 feet in diameter. happy 3rd of july!
